Sinclair Television Group and MGM are ramping up their science-fiction efforts with the new diginet, Comet, set to launch Oct. 31.

Comet will be the first-ever 24-hour sci-fi diginet in the country, with 1,500 hours of programming from MGM’s library, starting with TV series including Outer Limits and Dead Like Me. MGM films Moonraker and The Terminator will kick-start the diginet at its launch, with Species and Leviathan featured shortly after.

“MGM has an extensive collection of science fiction films and television movies that appeal to a vast audience who will now be able to access that content through broadcast television,” said David Amy, COO of Sinclair Broadcast Group.

At launch, Comet will reach 60 percent of the U.S. and be available in 65 million homes. The new service will launch on Sinclair-owned stations as well as several Tribune and Titan-owned TV stations.

“MGM is thrilled that Comet will debut in so many top markets, launching as the single largest multicast network and sci-fi channel to date,” said John Bryan, president of domestic television distribution at MGM, in a statement. “The sci-fi community is among the most expansive and loyal in entertainment, and we look forward to programming the channel for this ever-growing audience.”
