550 episodes is clearly no small achievement in the history of a TV series, and Fox’s iconic animated series “The Simpsons” decided to go big to celebrate the milestone.

On Sunday, Homer, Bart, Marge, Lisa, Maggie and the rest of the Springfield crew will get a Lego makeover in an episode entitled “Brick Like Me.”

“I think it’s just a beautiful product, and I think it’s about as labor intensive an episode of ‘The Simpsons’ as we’ve ever done,” said Executive Producer Al Jean.

The 22-minute episode features about 17 minutes of Lego CGI animation, and took about two years from start to finish to produce, according to Executive Producer Matt Selman.

Thanks to the blockbuster Warner Bros. feature film that was released in February, Legos are having a pop-culture moment. But Jean and Selman stressed that “The Simpsons” planned to go Lego long before there was a feature film hitting theaters.

Selman said that the idea for a Lego episode came from a passion he shared with writer Brian Kelly for the toys.

“It stems from the fact that we’ve all loved Lego for our whole lives,” Selman said on a conference call Tuesday. “We’ve been working on the episode for at least two years, but we’ve had a lifetime love affair with the Lego toy system.”

Fox has extended the Springfield Lego world offline, with a real Lego replica of the Simpsons’ house that aficionados can purchase and assemble, complete with Lego versions of the entire family (plus Ned Flanders) and the famous pink station wagon from the opening credits.

“The Simpsons” 550th episode airs Sunday May 4 at 8pm ET/PT.
