BBC’s Sherlock will begin its fourth season in a few weeks, and the network unleashed an intense trailer.
“The roads we walk have demons beneath and yours have been waiting for a very long time,” begins a voiceover in the preview.
The clip heavily features the spooky voice of Culverton Smith (Toby Jones), who plays the villain this season, and Mycroft Holmes (Mark Gatiss) declaring, “It’s not a game anymore.”
In a shocking ending to the promo, Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch)—appearing to be under duress—utters the haunting words “I love you” to an unknown person, but who?
Variety reported that in an interview with British GQ, Cumberbatch hinted that this time around might be the last for the hit program.
“It might be the end of an era. It feels like the end of an era, to be honest. It goes to a place where it will be pretty hard to follow on immediately,” he said.
The BBC series was created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, and also stars Martin Freeman as John Watson. Both Cumberbatch and Freeman have gone on to big movie and TV careers, with Cumberbatch currently starring in the title role in Marvel’s Dr. Strange and Freeman taking on the lead role in The Hobbit trilogy as well as FX’s critically acclaimed first season of Fargo.
Sherlock’s fourth season will premiere Jan. 1.
