The origin of the magical monster-fighting creatures known as witchers will be explored in Netflix’s new prequel series The Witcher: Blood Origin, premiering on Sunday, December 25.

The series is set in an elven world 1,200 years before the events told in Netflix’s The Witcher, featuring monster-killer and man-of-few-words Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill in seasons one and two and soon to be Liam Hemsworth in season three). In Blood Origin’s story, seven outcasts unite to fight a seemingly unstoppable power. The blood quest that forms between them gives rise to the prototype that evolves into the powerful beings known as witchers after the worlds of monsters, men and elves merge to become one.

The four-episode prequel stars Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Lenny Henry (Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power), Laurence O’Fuarain, Sophia Brown, Mirren Mack, Lizzie Annis, Francesca Mills, Zach Wyatt, Huw Novelli, Minnie Driver and Joey Batey, reprising his role from The Witcher as fan-favorite traveling bard Jaskier.

The Witcher: Blood Origin is written, executive produced and showrun by Declan de Barra, with Lauren Schmidt Hissrich also executive producing. The Witcher author Andrzej Sapkowski serves as creative consultant. Jason Brown and Sean Daniel from Hivemind, as well as Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko from Platige Films also executive produce.
