Selena Gomez may only be 5’5”, but she will be as big as players Candace Parker (6’4”), Elena Delle Donne (6’5”) and Brittney Griner (6’8”) when the WNBA post-season begins Thursday night via coverage on ESPN.
ESPN said that Gomez’s song, “Like a Champion,” will be used to open every telecast. Custom performance footage was shot in London for a video open that includes ESPN/WNBA co-branding integrated with the singer/actress. Footage will also be used in highlight packages as well as coming in from and out of commercial breaks.
ESPN plans to air as many as 17 post-season games, including coverage of the Eastern and Western Conference Finals and the WNBA Finals 2013 Presented by Boost Mobile.
ESPN2’s exclusive coverage of the Eastern and Western Conference Finals is scheduled to begin on September 26. The WNBA Finals 2013 are scheduled to start on October 6.
espnW.com will supplement ESPN’s schedule with live coverage and analysis throughout the WNBA post-season. In addition, ESPN said that all games would be accessible online at WatchESPN.com and via smartphones and tablets via the WatchESPN app.
The WNBA post-season can also be seen via ESPN on Xbox LIVE to gold members and on Apple TV to customers who receive their video subscription from an affiliated provider.
Brief Take: Much like using Carrie Underwood’s voice (and fame) for “Sunday Night Football,” having a big name like Selena Gomez for the WNBA brings a new level to its brand.
