George R.R. Martin went from page to screen, and now his stories are headed to the beloved medium of mixtape.
For “Game of Thrones’” fourth season, HBO has a few promotion plans up its sleeve, one of which is a collaboration with artists like Wale, Big Boi and Common for “Catch The Throne: The Mixtape.” The album, which also features tracks from newer artists such as Snow Tha Product and Bodega Bamz, has 10 tracks total, all of which sample music from the “Game of Thrones” soundtrack and are inspired by themes from the show.
According to the Wall Street Journal, some of these artists are also diehard fans. Common said he’s particularly fond of Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) and Wale proves his fandom with lyrics like “I’m tellin’ whoever messin’ with me / I can bring you that Khaleesi heat.”
“Catch The Throne: The Mixtape” will be released at a SXSW event for “Game of Thrones: The Exhibition” on March 7, with listening stations for the new tracks. The artists came out with a preview of the mixtape as well:
Also in celebration of the Season 4 premiere, HBO is hosting a live screening for fans in Brooklyn on Thursday, March 20. The Barclays Center will host “The Epic Fan Experience” which will feature, at its core, an advanced screening of the season premiere for fans. Also on display will be costumes and props from the show as well as photo ops with the infamous Iron Throne. Tickets went on sale this morning and sold out in an hour, with 7,000 lucky fans getting their tickets this week, proceeds going to charity.

“‘Game of Thrones’ has become a truly global sensation thanks to the show’s incredibly dedicated and loyal fans,” said Zach Enterlin, SVP of advertising and promotion at HBO. “To create an event that matches the excitement of the viewers and the epic scale of this series, we knew we had to do something really special.”
And for a traditional twist in its marketing plan, HBO has been hyping its new season through short teasers online, like the “Stark Direwolf Tease” below, each focusing on the Season 4 status or fate of one character.
“Game of Thrones” returns to HBO on April 6.
