YouTube Red’s new series, Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television* — starring, natch, Ryan Hansen and The Handmaid’s Tale Samira Wiley — plans to make the most of that asterisk.

In the case of the show’s main titles, by Chicago-based Sarofksy, it lets viewers know that even though the title says the protagonist is solving crimes on television, it’s really okay if viewers watch the streaming series on their phones.

The main titles also draw from crime series of the ‘70s, with its divided screens and portraits of characters aiming guns. Within that, the sequence shows the main characters using all sorts of different technology to watch their show.

“This treatment allowed us to introduce Ryan and Samira while also setting up the show-within-a-show idea, and the different viewing platforms,” said Sarofsky lead designer Duarte Elvas in a statement. “Secondary design elements such as crime scene tape and the split screens also helped establish the crime-show vibe.”

Besides Hansen and Wiley, the series also features celebrities playing bizarro versions of themselves, including Joel McHale, Donald Faison, Eric Christian Olsen, Jon Cryer and Kristen Bell.

The series premiered globally on YouTube Red on Oct. 25.
