As the radical change of the 1960s unfurls before them, Britain’s royals are dealing with personal transformations of their own in season two of Netflix’s The Crown.

Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy) and her husband and royal consort, Prince Phillip (Matt Smith), are struggling as he yearns for freedom and adventure and she remains tethered to British tradition. And Princess Margaret (Vanessa Kirby), who walked away from her love, Peter Townsend (Ben Miles) in season one, continues to straddle the line between being royal and being modern.

The Crown is based on the play, The Audience, by Peter Morgan and in this series, Morgan teams with director Stephen Daldry and producer Andy Harries to recreate the world of the British monarchy from nearly 60 years ago.

Netflix’s gorgeous drama chronicling the reign of Queen Elizabeth II returns Dec. 8.
