Never one to mince words or shy from offending someone sitting right in front of him, comedian Ricky Gervais will return to host his fourth Golden Globes Awards on Sunday, Jan. 10, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

“We’re excited to have Ricky Gervais back to host the most enjoyable awards show of the season in his own inimitable way,” said NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt in a statement. “Disarming and surprising, Ricky is ready to honor — and send up — the best work of the year in film and television. Fasten your seats belts.”

“Ricky Gervais left us with a lasting impression and we are thrilled to have him back in our show as we honor the best in film and television,” said Lorenzo Soria, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, also in a statement. “His off-the-cuff wit and quirky charm will surely have the room and audiences around the world at the edge of their seats.”

Awards shows seem to be heading back to having edgy comedians as hosts — instead of multi-talented song-and-dance men and women — with Chris Rock returning to host the Oscars this February.

Gervais hosted the Globes for three consecutive years from 2010-12 when the network registered ratings gains from the previous two telecasts. Over that 2010-12 span, the Golden Globes averaged a 5.2 rating among adults 18-49 and 17 million viewers overall, a 6% increase from the 2009 telecast in the demo and 14% or 2.1 million persons in total viewers.

For the past three years, the Golden Globes have been hosted by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, a combination that critics almost universally loved but the busy duo announced that 2015 would be their last at the podium.
