Taika Waititi moves from suburban vampires with FX’s What We Do in the Shadows to pirates on the open sea with new HBO Max comedy Our Flag Means Death, starring Rhys Darby as pampered aristocrat Stede Bonnet who decides to try his delicate hand at pirating. Waititi – who directs and executive produces – also stars as history’s most-feared pirate, Blackbeard.

The teaser, which begins with a sort of pirate on-ship self-help group, is scored with Jethro Tull’s “Locomotive Breath.”

Also starring are Game of Thrones’ Kristian Nairn as “Wee John Feeney,” Fred Armisen (Saturday Night Live, Portlandia), Ewen Bremner, David Fane, Nathan Foad, Joel Fry, Samson Kayo, Guz Khan, Rory Kinnear, Matt Maher, Con O’Neill and Vico Ortiz. Leslie Jones (Saturday Night Live) and Nat Faxon have signed on as recurring guest stars.

Besides Waititi, the series is executive produced by series creator and showrunner David Jenkins along with Garrett Basch and Dan Halsted.

Our Flag Means Death starts streaming on HBO Max in March.
