After long six years, Rockstar Games released a much anticipated trailer for Red Dead Redemption 2 that indicates the story will be set in the past.
The original Red Dead Redemption, an open-world, western action-adventure game, was set in 1911 and followed John Marston, who, under an arrangement with authorities that doesn’t turn out as planned, was trying to turn over a new leaf with his wife and son.
One of the main themes was the end of the cowboy way of life, so fans have been speculating that Red Dead Redemption 2 would be a prequel, and the trailer seems to support that theory.
The lack of railroads, the fact that signs for the general store and a stage coach in the trailer have a new, more polished look, and the great number of buffalo featured all point to a story that takes place before 1890.
The trailer also pays homage to the beauty of the game, with expansive nature shots of sunsets, trails, river and wildlife.
Rockstar has described the game as “an epic tale of life in America’s unforgiving heartland.”
Red Dead Redemption 2 will be released worldwide in fall 2017 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One systems.
