British graphic designer Graham McCallum was named the recipient of the the 2014 PromaxBDA Industry Achievement Award on Thursday, and will be honored at the association’s annual Europe Conference in London next month.

McCallum, the founder of design and branding agency Kemistry, is being recognized for more than 50 years of leadership and innovation in broadcast graphic design.

“From his early work here at the BBC to what is now a whole library of title sequences and branding packages across Europe and the world, Graham McCallum has led a 50 year creative revolution that transformed the graphic design industry,” said Justin Bairamian, creative cirector at M&A Creative, BBC, and 2014 PromaxBDA Europe Awards chair. “He is a true pioneer in visual communications and a natural recipient for our Industry Achievement Award. We are looking forward to honoring him at this year’s conference.”

The Industry Achievement Award recognizes an individual’s long-term innovation, creativity, and contribution to the business of broadcast promotion, marketing, and design.

McCallum began his career at the BBC in the 1960s, working on some of the most iconic children’s programs of the era, including “Playschool” and “Jackanory,” before establishing his first agency, MKD, in 1986.

Among the new agency’s earliest successes was the branding campaign for the launch of The Discovery Channel in Europe.

He founded Kemistry in 1997 with Ricky Churchill. In 2004, Kemistry spearheaded the radical overhaul and redesign of CNN’s on-air look, getting rid of excess visual clutter and graphic distractions.

McCallum will be presented with the Industry Achievement Award the evening of March 25 during the awards ceremony at the 2014 Europe Conference.
