On the heels of his retirement, PromaxBDA will honor Telemundo 47 Senior News Anchor Jorge Ramos with its Lifetime Achievement Award for his nearly five-decade career.
An award-winning journalist, Ramos joined Telemundo 47 in 1980 and is a founder of the news operations for the station. Before retiring in September, he served as the news anchor for Noticiero Telemundo 47 as well as WNJU Telemundo 47 New York, a local station serving the Spanish-speaking communities and neighborhoods of the New York Tri-State area.
The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes those in the entertainment marketing industry for their outstanding contributions and lasting impacts. Ramos will accept the honor at PromaxLatino 2018 on November 14 at the New World Center in Miami.
“For nearly 40 years, it has been my great privilege to report the news and world events that impacted our Tri-State community,” said Ramos in a statement about his departure. “I am grateful to our viewers for welcoming me into their homes and their hearts and honored for the opportunity to serve them during times of hardship and joy. I will miss them deeply and will always cherish their love and support.”
Ramos has worked closely with the Tri-State’s Hispanic community, collaborating with many local organizations, non-profits and charities.
One such initiative was presenting special reports for the station’s Unsolved Crimes segment, which has led to the arrest of four criminals since its debut in 2002. In 2003, the Foundation of the Police Department New York paid tribute to Ramos for his help in solving a case that had gone unpunished for a decade, as well as for his work with the NYPD Crime Stoppers program. Ramos also received a plaque from Commissioner Ray Kelly for his reporting.
In addition, Ramos has hosted numerous special programs broadcast by WNJU, including the inauguration of President George H.W. Bush in 1989 and the inauguration of President Bill Clinton in 1993.
He’s also been been involved in numerous parades over the years, serving as the official narrator for live broadcasts such as the National Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York, and the Dominican Day Parade. He’s also been named a grand marshal and godfather of parades by cultural organizations across New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, and has received seven Emmy awards and several medals from the Association of Latin Entertainment Critics of New York.
Ramos earned his degree in humanities at the University of Puerto Rico, and began his career in the media in 1972, working at the radio station WKVM in Santurce, Puerto Rico. He later joined Telemundo 47 in 1979 where he served as the station’s first field reporter, and is a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
“Jorge has been Telemundo 47’s main anchor for several decades and for so many of our viewers, Jorge has become an extended member of their families,” Cristina Schwarz, president and general manager of Telemundo 47, said in a statement when Ramos announced his retirement. “We are deeply appreciative for his service to our community and his commitment to broadcast excellence. While we will deeply miss Jorge’s presence at Telemundo 47, we all look forward to witnessing the next chapter in his distinguished career.”
