FX’s John Landgraf made waves this summer when he announced that the industry has hit the year of “Peak TV,” saying that there is just “too much television” for consumers to choose from and it is becoming overwhelming.

To prove this point, FX Networks Research released the chart below on Wednesday, counting a total of 409 scripted series available in 2015 across broadcast, cable and streaming services.

That number is almost double the amount of scripted shows from just five years ago.

Specifically, basic cable series have jumped 174 percent since 2009, with premium cable up 76 percent and broadcast up 20 percent. Since 2002, basic cable series have increased 484 percent.

The findings and television’s sheer number of scripted options goes back to Landgraf’s comments at this summer’s TCA appearance, when he made the argument that TV brands must now be a filter for those choices - not just original content creators.
