When civil rights attorney Larry Krasner was the unlikely winner of Philadelphia’s race for district attorney in 2017, some people celebrated, while others worried. Krasner ran on a platform of ending mass incarceration in a city that had one of the highest incarceration rates of any in the U.S., and to do that, he would need to reform the criminal justice system from within. When Krasner won in a landslide, it shocked the city’s establishment.

Now in office, Krasner has to make allies out of people he criticized during his campaign. Eight-episode docuseries Philly D.A. chronicles the challenges of Krasner’s fight for reform. The series comes from filmmakers Ted Passon, Yoni Brook and Nicole Salazar, who gained unprecedented access to Krasner’s office and to everything that happens behind the scenes at Philadelphia’s criminal-justice system.

Philly D.A. premiered at Sundance earlier this month and debuts on PBS on Tuesday, April 20 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
