OWN’s David Makes Man tells the story of a 14-year-old prodigy, David (Akili McDowell), who is faced with the difficult choice of staying in the streets to help his poverty stricken mother survive or ascend to the higher education he craves and find a way out.

The story is inspired by the life of Oscar-winning writer Tarell Alvin McCraney, who co-wrote Moonlight with Barry Jenkins, and, like that movie, is set in South Florida.

McCraney serves as executive producer of the series alongside Dee Harris-Lawrence (Shots Fired, Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G.) who serves as showrunner. Mike Kelley and Melissa Loy (Revenge) under their Page Fright production banner, Michael B. Jordan (Creed, Black Panther) via his Outlier Society Productions and Oprah Winfrey are also executive producers. Warner Horizon Scripted Television produces.

On Friday, Jan. 25, OWN hosted a panel for the series at Sundance, featuring McCraney, Jordan, Harris-Lawrence, McDowell and other series stars Alana Arenas and Phylicia Rashad.

David Makes Man will premiere this summer on OWN. The first-look trailer is above; key art is below.
