Aaron Sorkin tells the story of the Trial of the Chicago 7 using his specific brand of prose and a talented cast, including Sacha Baron Cohen as Abbie Hoffman and Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne as Tom Hayden, in the film coming to Netflix on Oct. 16. It will be released in select theaters starting Sept. 25 prior to arriving on the streaming service.
The story starts with what was intended to be a peaceful protest at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago that turned into a violent clash with police and the National Guard. The protest’s organizers, including Hoffman, Jerry Rubin (Succession’s Jeremy Strong, just off his Emmy for outstanding lead actor in a drama), Tom Hayden (Redmayne) and Bobby Seal (Watchmen’s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, also fresh off an Emmy for outstanding lead actor in a limited series), were charged with conspiracy to incite a riot. The trial that followed is considered one of history’s most notorious, and the entire scenario resonates with what is happening in the country today.
The movie also stars Joseph Gordon Levitt, Oscar winners Michael Keaton and Mark Rylance, and Oscar nominee Frank Langella.
