One cisgender man and his pet monkey are the only two male mammals left in the world after a mysterious event takes out everyone with a Y chromosome in FX on Hulu’s Y: The Last Man.
Based on a graphic novel by DC Comics, the series stars Diane Lane as Congresswoman Jennifer Brown, who quickly gets promoted to President Brown when all of the world’s men, including the President, are suddenly stricken by a strange illness and die.
The series follows the female survivors in this new world as they struggle with their efforts to restore what was lost and the opportunity to build something better.
“They are hungry, angry, terrified,” says Brown.
Besides Lane, the series also stars Ben Schnetzer as Yorick Brown, the world’s only remaining man. It also stars Ashley Romans, Olivia Thirlby, Amber Tamblyn, Marin Ireland, Diana Bang, Elliot Fletcher and Juliana Canfield.
Keeping with the theme of the show, all episodes of the season are directed by women and the production has a significant number of female department heads, including both DPs, the production designer, costume designer, casting director, editors, stunt coordinator and more.
Eliza Clark serves as showrunner and executive producer along with Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson of Color Force, Mari Jo Winkler-Ioffreda, Louise Friedberg, Brian K. Vaughan and Melina Matsoukas. Nellie Reed serves as producer. Y: The Last Man is produced by FX Productions.
Y: The Last Man debuts Monday, Sept. 13 on FX on Hulu.
