In the late 1800s, C.J. Walker made history by pioneering the black haircare movement and becoming America’s first female self-made millionaire.

Now, Octavia Spencer is stepping into the shoes of the influential businesswoman in Netflix’s four-part miniseries, Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madame C.J. Walker.

The trailer shows the Oscar-winning actress in the titular role as she discovers her calling, transforms the industry, and provokes social change by launching her own product line while fighting post-slavery racial and gender biases.

“Sisters, let’s talk about hair; they put us down, tell us we’re ugly, make us feel ugly,” Walker (Spencer) says in the spot.“Wonderful hair leads to wonderful opportunities.”

Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madame C.J. Walker is co-executive produced by Spencer, Janine Sherman Barrois, Elle Johnson, Maverick Carter, LeBron James, Mark Holder, Christine Holder, Jamal Henderson, and Kasi Lemmons—who directed the series alongside DeMane Davis.

Blair Underwood, Tiffany Haddish, Carmen Ejogo, Garrett Morris, Kevin Carroll, and Bill Bellamy also appear in the series, which premieres March 20 on Netflix.
