Stars of Hulu’s psychic crime family drama Shut Eye revealed what’s in store for their show’s second season at New York Comic Con on Friday. “They peel back the onion of the characters more,” said Susan Misner, who plays neurologist Dr. Nora White.
“Season two is about their past,” said Jeffrey Donovan, who plays the Haverford family patriarch and con artist. “Right from the get go, we’re going to flash back to where Charlie and Linda [his on-screen wife] met for the very first time.” The second season is “90 percent of where they are now and 10 percent of what they used to be and it’s kind of sad…what hopes and dreams and aspirations they had 20 years ago and where they are now,” Donovan admitted.
“Some pretty cool storytelling is going to happen this season. Not that it was necessarily bad last season but it’s going to be more compelling,” Donovan added.
“You see people doing many things that will surprise you as an audience – I can’t wait to see how people respond to it,” said KaDee Strickland, who plays Linda. “I was thrilled to see them really just go for it in the writers’ room with surprising story lines.”
Donovan and Strickland both said they thoroughly enjoyed playing these more developed, complicated versions of their characters. “What I love about season two is that these characters feel very different this year in terms of understanding why they act the way they act,” Strickland said.
“They are much more dimensional this season,” said Donovan, adding that although he may be most recognizable from playing his characters in Burn Notice and Hitch, Shut Eye’s Charlie Haverford is the role that’s closest to his own heart.
“Charlie I think is closer to me than any character I’ve ever played and therefore is one of the most difficult characters I’ve had to play,” Donovan said, adding that, just like Charlie, “I never want to let my wife down, I never want to let my children down.”
Shut Eye returns to Hulu on December 6.
