In a trailer for season two of SundanceTV’s Top of the Lake: China Girl, Detective Robin Griffin (Elisabeth Moss) takes on a case involving an Asian girl whose body is discovered in a suitcase washed up on a beach.

Nicole Kidman joins the cast for the sophomore season of the limited-series crime drama, along with Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones, Star Wars: The Force Awakens).

Other new faces include David Dencik (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Alice Englert (Beautiful Creatures, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell) and Ewen Leslie (The Daughter).

The storyline finds Griffin recently returned to Sydney and trying to rebuild her life. When the body of an Asian girl washes up on Bondi Beach, there appears little hope of finding the killer, until Robin realizes “China Girl” didn’t die alone. Robin turns to the investigation to solve her own problems.

While in the process of trying to reconnect with her daughter Mary (Alice Englert), whom she gave up for adoption at birth, she discovers Mary’s boyfriend (Dencik) may have been involved with the death “China Girl.” Kidman plays Mary’s adoptive mother, complicating the relationship.

Top of the Lake: China Girl will debut on SundanceTV in the U.S. in September, following its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival later this month.

New episodes will also stream in the U.S. on Hulu the day after they air on the linear network, and will be made available on the SundanceTV app and sundance.tv.

The series is produced by See-Saw Films for BBC Two, in association with BBC First and Foxtel in Australia, BBC UKTV in New Zealand, SundanceTV and Hulu in the United States, ARTE in France and BBC Worldwide.
