Nickelodeon is focusing on nostalgia at San Diego Comic-Con, and in particular, it’s focusing on bringing back one of its hits from the ‘90s, “Legends of the Hidden Temple.”
On Saturday, Nickelodeon released the first trailer its new made-for-TV movie, which will premiere this fall.
In addition, Nickelodeon’s booth, which measures 1,800 square-feet on the Exhibit Hall floor, features multiple activations that call back to Nickelodeon in the ‘90s, including photo ops, exclusive merchandise and more.
Nickelodeon’s “Legends of the Hidden Temple” virtual-reality experience seems tailor-made for millennials since it was a popular game show on the network between 1993 and 1995. The show featured a Mayan temple maze that on-show teams explored to try to find the lost treasure.

Nickelodeon is banking on this nostalgia with its latest VR experience, providing users a guided tour of the temple, led by the iconic King Olmec, Keeper of the Temple, a Mayan talking head who hosted the show. The four-and-a-half minute experience takes guests on a trip through the hidden temple, allowing them to search for hidden treasure while reliving a part of their childhood.
Nickelodeon chose Legends of the Hidden Temple in an effort to bring millennials back to the network and reacquaint them with the brand.
While the VR experience is currently a guided tour, Nickelodeon has plans to make the experience even more interactive in the future. The network expects to release a more game-like version before the debut of the Legends of the Hidden Temple live-action TV movie, announced earlier this year. Fans will be able to try that version for themselves when it’s released on Facebook and YouTube in the coming weeks.
