In Happy Gilmore, Adam Sandler showed that a tough hockey player could also be tough on the golf course.
The NFL wants people to know that its players can be just as rugged on the green.
Six retired NFL players—led by Hall of Famers Jerry Rice and Chris Doleman—will go from hitting and being hit on the gridiron to hitting drives on the links as part of “Big Break NFL,” the Golf Channel’s reality competition now entering its 20th season.
“Big Break NFL,” premiering in October, will also feature Tim Brown, Marc Bulger, Al Del Greco and Mark Rypien playing with and against two aspiring professional golfers. The NFL participants will be competing for $50,000, to be donated to their respective charity. The non-NFL golfers will be vying for exemptions on the 2014 PGA Tour and LPGA Tour, as well as cash and prizes.
Marketing support is expected to include TV, print, Internet and social media destinations such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Pinterest.
The six NFL players were described as “boasting single digit handicaps with several having competed in PGA TOUR and Web.com Tour events.” The competition includes a “variety of challenges that test their physical skills and mental toughness,” according to Golf Channel.
“When Golf Channel approached us about this program, we were excited to work with them to bring our fans closer to some of our greatest players in a new and unique way,” said Tracy Perlman, NFL VP of entertainment marketing and promotions, in a statement. “We are pleased to be working with Golf Channel to give some of the greatest to ever play in the NFL the opportunity to compete against one another on a different playing field and for good causes.”
“Big Break NFL” was filmed on the golf course at Dorado Beach Resort in Puerto Rico.
