The National Football League and DirecTV are close to a deal to renew the satellite TV provider’s exclusive Sunday ticket package in a multi-year agreement, sources confirmed to Variety Thursday. The deal is expected to be done by the New Year.
Estimated to be worth $1 billion annually, DirecTV’s exclusive NFL package, which costs $300 per season, has allowed subscribers to watch football games outside of their local markets on Sundays for the past 20 years.
DirecTV’s current contract with the NFL, worth $4 billion, expires at the end of 2014.
Approximately two million of DirecTV’s 20 million U.S. subscribers pay for the NFL package.
The NFL recently set record-breaking TV rights agreements with broadcast networks Fox, CBS and NBC that run through 2022 and are worth $3 billion annually to the league.
