Conservative news outlet Newsmax Media Inc. is looking to compete in the cable space now against the likes of Fox News, and has secured a deal with cable provider DIRECTV to do it.

Planning to launch in June, the Florida-based Newsmax TV says it aims to target conservative baby boomers, similar to the strategy of Fox News, which has dominated cable news ratings over competitors MSNBC and CNN in the past months. Newsmax TV’s initial plan will be to carry over its website (Newsmax.com) followers to its new on-air presence, offering nine hours of original programming per day at first, including news coverage, health and finance content.

Later this summer, the news outlet wants to add an OTT channel to the mix as it also begins to incorporate content from Newsmax.com, Newsmaxhealth.com, and Moneynews.com.

Brief Take: Fox News has been a ratings powerhouse for years, boasting this month that it has been No. 1 in cable news for almost 150 months straight. Newsmax TV looks to take away some of those viewers, and possibly that ratings domination.
