A Kickstart campaign to bring back the cult classic Mystery Science Theater 3000 has succeeded, with a new 14-episode season in the works now.

The campaign, which raised more than $5.76 million, soared well past its $5.9 million goal and became the largest crowdfunded video project in Internet history - it just barely surpassed the $5.7 million raised by Veronica Mars.

Thanks to the campaign, Mystery Science Theater 3000 host Joel Hodgson has said he plans on creating a full season of the show as well as a holiday special. The new season is expected to follow along the same lines of the original show, in which Hodgson stars as a janitor who was sent to space and watches movies with his two robot friends, who all share their (often very honest, sarcastic) thoughts on the film as it plays.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 was bought by Shout! Factory this fall and backed the Kickstarter campaign.

The original Mystery Science Theater 3000, created by Hodgson, aired on The Comedy Channel starting in 1991, moving to Sci-Fi in 1997 before getting canceled two years later.
