Twentieth Century Fox Television and Netflix announced a multi-year exclusive subscription VOD agreement on Monday, for the hit comedy “New Girl,” starring Zooey Deschanel. The show’s entire first season is now available to Netflix subscribers to watch instantly, and is not available elsewhere. The show’s second season will become available on Netflix some time after the third season begins airing this fall on Fox.

Brief Take: The deal falls through an unusually early window for streaming rights, which generally follow syndication. That should bode well for Fox, which can now use binge-viewing as a promotional tool, as viewers have all summer to catch up on “New Girl” before delving into new episodes when they air in September. For Netflix’s part, the leading online subscription-video service adds yet another piece to its growing portfolio of high-profile original and exclusive content.
