Netflix unveiled not one but two first look videos of upcoming 2016 series during its Wednesday morning CES keynote: British royalty drama The Crown, and Baz Luhrmann’s music-driven tale of the South Bronx, The Get Down.
Based on Peter Morgan’s Tony-winning play The Audience, The Crown tells the inside story of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, picking up just after her wedding at the tender age of 25. Faced with an empire in decline the Queen (Claire Foy) must navigate the coveted worlds of power and privilege found behind locked doors at Westminster and Buckingham Palace. John Lithgow stars as Sir Winston Churchill in this historic drama, which Netflix has said could focus on one decade of the famous monarch’s reign for each season it runs – even though for now, the streaming service has only committed to one season.
Set in the 1970s New Luhrmann’s The Get Down looks at a rag-tag crew of South Bronx youths through the lens of the music that defined their generation. The series does nothing less than, as the press materials have suggested, “deliver a mythic saga of how New York at the brink of bankruptcy gave birth to hip-hop, punk and disco.” Seeing as how this is a Baz Luhrmann vehicle, expect plenty of verbal games, improvised dance steps and vibrantly colored graffiti along the way.
No release dates were announced for either show. Both are expected to debut later this year.
