Real-life footage of clips from public figures such as Mark Zuckerberg, Theresa May and Vladimir Putin juxtaposed with disturbing snippets from season four of Netflix’s Black Mirror—and set to ABBA’s “Happy New Year”—makes for an unsettling send off of 2017.
The video by creative agency B-Reel is as disturbing as the show itself, which “taps into our collective unease with the modern world” through episodes that feel just out of reach of reality, yet usually a little too close for comfort.
The mix of factual events and fiction sends a message that feels more like a warning than a celebration, as Adweek puts it, suggesting the milestones of 2017 that have been “so connected,” and “so progressive,” will have dire consequences in 2018.
The two-minute promo debuted as Netflix dropped season four of Black Mirror on December 29, just in time to ring in the new year.
