“I don’t know my own name. The only thing I know is that it happened, to nearly a million people, and I will never forget it, and neither should anyone else,” says Kate Ashby (Michaela Coel, Chewing Gum) in Netflix’s trailer for Black Earth Rising about the Rwandan genocide.

The limited series examines the West’s relationship with Africa, set in a world of prosecution of war crimes.

It follows the journey of Kate, a Rwandan orphaned by the genocide who, is raised in London by an adoptive mother, and trying to discover the truth of her past. She is helped in her search by lawyer Michael Ennis (John Goodman).

The series also stars Harriet Walter (Patrick Melrose), Tamara Tunie (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) and Noma Dumezweni (Electric Dreams).

Hugo Blick (The Honourable Woman, The Shadow Line) serves as writer and director, with Greg Brenman (The Honourable Woman, Doctor Foster) as executive producer.

Black Earth Rising premieres January 25 on Netflix.
