“You a whole different type of brother; you do realize that, right,” says a friend to a young Barack Obama, who is the subject of an original biopic entitled Barry, exclusively released through Netflix December 16.
The biopic is set in New York City in the fall of 1981, when Barack Obama (played by newcomer Devon Terrell), was just beginning his junior year at Columbia University. The two-minute trailer finds the impressionable student struggling to stay connected to his mother (played by Ashley Judd), his estranged father and his classmates.
Barry explores identity, racism, crime and injustice, issues which would later go on to shape the man who would rise to become president of the United States.
“My mom’s from Kansas and my dad’s from Kenya,” says Obama talking at a dinner table in one scene in the trailer. “You know what that makes you,” asks a man across the table from him. “No, sir, I don’t,” Obama responds.
“It makes you American,” answers the man.
In another gripping moment, Obama is stopped by a police officer who shines a light in his face and demands his ID. “I don’t see you ID-ing them,” says Obama obviously flustered. “What’s so special about me?”
The film is directed by Vikram Gandhi, and also stars Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) as Obama’s girlfriend, and Ellar Coltrane (Boyhood) and Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton) as a couple of his friends.
