Nearly two months after tackling New York’s corrupted justice system in Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us, Netflix has unveiled its new true-crime limited series, Unbelievable.

The series follows teenager Marie Adler who claims she was sexually assaulted, only to be deemed “unbelievable” by local law enforcement. Meanwhile, two female detectives team up to investigate a string of crimes that are remarkably similar to Marie’s incident, leading to the hunt of a possible serial rapist.

The story is drawn from The Marshall Project and the ProPublica Pulitzer Prize-winning article, “An Unbelievable Story of Rape,” which explores the false rape accusation of a Colorada teenager. The story also led to a segment on NPR’s “This American Life,” titled “Anatomy of a Doubt.”
