Netflix has released first-look images, a teaser, and the premiere date for the critically acclaimed and highly anticipated second season of The Crown, starring Claire Foy and Matt Smith as Queen Elizabeth II and Her Royal Consort Prince Phillip.

The series, created by The Audience‘s Peter Morgan, tells the inside story of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign. Season two will focus on the trials Elizabeth faces while trying to maintain the fragile world order that sets in following World War II.

The Crown’s sophomore season begins with Her Majesty’s Armed Forces fighting an illegal war in Egypt and it ends with a scandal that causes the downfall of her third Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan.

Season two will showcase the transition between a time when society consistently valued deference to the beginning of the revolutionary mindset that marked the 1960s.

The Crown returns to Netflix for its second season on December 8.
