Netflix dominated the 2020 Emmy nominations, announced online Tuesday, with a record-setting 160 total nominations, including best drama nods for The Crown, Ozark and Stranger Things and best comedy nods for Dead to Me and The Kominsky Method.
HBO, which is now in a head-to-head battle with Netflix for Emmy nominations and wins, came in a distant second with 107, but nabbed best drama nods for Succession and best comedy nods for Curb Your Enthusiasm and Insecure. Without Game of Thrones, which last year nabbed a record-setting 32 nominations, HBO had a hard time keeping up with the prolific streamer. Next year, HBO Max will be in the mix, offering more opportunities for HBO to compete. HBO’s Watchmen was 2020’s most-nominated program with a total of 26.
Other cable networks leading the nomination list were FX with 33 and Pop punching far above its weight with 16, including an outstanding comedy nod for the outgoing season of audience fave Schitt’s Creek and nods for its cast including Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Dan Levy and Annie Murphy.
Broadcast networks were far back with NBC leading with 47 nominations, down from last year’s 58; ABC next with 26, up from last year’s 26; CBS in third with 23, down from last year’s 43; Fox in fourth with 15, down from last year’s 18 and PBS bringing up the rear with six nominations, up from last year’s four.
Also nominated for best drama were AMC’s perennial nominee Better Call Saul, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale and Disney+’s The Mandalorian, marking the first series nomination for the nascent streamer. One drama that was missing here was Apple TV+’s The Morning Show, although Steve Carell and Jennifer Aniston were nominated outstanding lead actor and actress and Billy Crudup and Mark Duplass were each nominated outstanding supporting actor in a drama.
Also nominated on the comedy side were NBC’s The Good Place, Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and FX’s What We Do in the Shadows.
Nominations for the increasingly competitive category of outstanding limited series were Hulu’s Little Fires Everywhere, FX’s Mrs America, Netflix’s Unbelievable, Netflix’s Unorthodox and HBO’s Watchmen. HBO has won this category in 2019 and 2017 with Chernobyl and Big Little Lies, respectively. FX won in 2018 with American Crime Story: The Assassinatino of Gianni Versace.
Nominations for outstanding talk variety show were Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, TBS’ Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Last Week Tonight has won this award for the past four years. Notably missing are NBC’s The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon and CBS’ The Late Late Show with James Corden, although the category had less wiggle room with rule changes allowing only five entries instead of six as in the recent past.
Nominations for outstanding competition program were Fox’s The Masked Singer, Netflix’s Nailed It, VH1’s RuPaul’s Drag Race, Bravo’s Top Chef and NBC’s The Voice. RuPaul’s Drag Race was last year’s winner in this category.
Among the acting categories, nominations for outstanding lead actor in a drama are Jason Bateman for Ozark, Sterling K Brown for This Is Us, Steve Carell for The Morning Show, Billy Porter for Pose and Bryan Cox and Jeremy Strong for Succession. Porter was last year’s winner in this category, although Brown won this award in 2017 and has been nominated every year that This Is Us has been on the air. Missing in this category is the typically nominated Bob Odenkirk for Better Call Saul.
Nominees for outstanding lead actress in a drama series are The Morning Show’s Jennifer Aniston, The Crown’s Olivia Colman, last year’s winner Jodie Comer for Killing Eve, Ozark’s Laura Linney, 2018’s winner Sandra Oh for Killing Eve and Euphoria’s Zendaya.
Nominees for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series are Black-ish’s Anthony Anderson, Black Monday’s Don Cheadle, The Good Place’s Ted Danson, The Kaminsky Method’s Michael Douglas, Schitt’s Creek’s Eugene Levy and Ramy’s Ramy Youssef. Last year’s winner, Bill Hader for HBO’s Barry, did not compete this year because the show did not air.
Nominees for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series are Dead to Me’s Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s previous winner Rachael Brosnahan, Schitt’s Creek’s Catherine O’Hara, Insecure’s Issa Rae and Black-ish’s Tracy Ellis Ross.
