In the 1980s, spiritual guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh purchased a large piece of land in the Oregon desert and turned it into a utopian city that caused massive conflict with local ranchers.

Netflix’s six-part documentary series Wild Wild Country takes a deep dive into the controversy that ensued around the community of followers, called Rajneeshees, which escalated into a national scandal that included the first bioterror attack in U.S. history, the largest case of illegal wiretapping ever recorded, and the world’s biggest collection of Rolls-Royce automobiles.

“It’s a tale so wild that seeing means barely believing,” says Netflix.

The series “takes viewers back to this pivotal, yet largely forgotten moment in American cultural history, one in which our national tolerance for the separation of church and state was sorely tested.”

Through a combination of archival footage and modern-day interviews, it explores topics such as religion, politics, violence, immigration, the legal system and democracy.

The series is from executive producers Mark and Jay Duplass of Duplass Brothers Productions. Chapman Way and Maclain Way of The Battered Bastards of Baseball direct.

Wild Wild Country launches March 16 on Netflix.
