Netflix on Wednesday confirmed speculation that it would allow subscribers to download some of its content, and the new policy applies to subscribers worldwide, including in the U.S.
“While many members enjoy watching Netflix at home, we’ve often heard they also want to continue their Stranger Things binge while on airplanes and other places where internet is expensive or limited,” wrote Eddy Wu, director of product innovation, on the company’s blog.
Downloading is being made available to all subscribers at no additional cost, with many TV shows and movies ready to be downloaded. (Variety provides a list here.) The new feature is available to subscribers of all plans and content can be downloaded to both phones and tablets running Android or iOS.
While allowing subscribers to download content is new to Netflix, it’s been available on other services for some time, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Amazon Prime introduced offline viewing in September 2015, while Starz has allowed downloads of nearly 100 percent of its library since it launched its standalone over-the-top service in April.
