As the menacing character Count Olaf, Neil Patrick Harris shatters the fourth wall to reveal that his A Series of Unfortunate Events will return March 30.

He taps on the camera screen with a large knife, addressing those viewers who have “burned the midnight oil” in the first trailer for season two, which was released on New Year’s Day.

“Now there may be some of you who may be surprised that Netflix would choose this to be the first face you see in 2018,” he says. “But those are the same people who wouldn’t recognize handsome if it set your house on fire.”

The 10-episode second season covers books five through nine in Daniel Handler’s saga.

The novels and show recount the tragic tale of the Baudelaire orphans – Violet, Klaus, and Sunny – and their extraordinary encounters with the devious Count Olaf who will stop at nothing to get his hands on their inheritance. Foiling his many dastardly plans and disguises, the young siblings discover clues to their parents’ mysterious deaths, links to a covert organization, and begin to unlock long-held family secrets.

New cast members in season two include Nathan Fillion as Jacques Snicket, Tony Hale as Jerome Squalor, Lucy Punch as as Esmé Squalor, Sara Rue as a “librarian” and Roger Bart as Vice Principal Nero.

Handler is an executive producer along with Emmy-Award winner Barry Sonnenfeld.
