As movie theatres across the globe remain closed as a result of COVID-19, NBCUniversal is filling the void by bringing the theatre experience directly into viewers’ homes.

The company on Friday launched “Stay-In Theater,” a movie night experience airing family-friendly films across USA, Syfy, E! and Telemundo with limited commercial interruptions.

“Families around the world are staying at home to stay safe and stop the spread. NBCUniversal is committed to providing the content and viewing experiences that will create special family bonding moments,” said Josh Feldman, EVP, head of marketing and creative advertising, NBCUniversal, in a statement.

Over the weekend, the first edition allowed families to enjoy Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets across USA, Syfy and E! and Kung Fu Panda 2 on Telemundo. The experience will continue every Friday and Saturday for the next two weeks, featuring the following films:

  • Friday, April 17: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban across USA, SYFY, and E!
  • Saturday, April 18: Zootopia on Telemundo
  • Friday, April 24: Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire across USA, SYFY, and E!
  • Saturday, April 25: Max on Telemundo

In partnership with Target, NBCUniversal is also reducing commercial time in national cable from 35 minutes to one minute 15 seconds, which gives viewers nearly 34 minutes of additional content, the company said. Seven minutes of promo time has been repurposed to show “fun, behind-the-scenes content related to the movie” as well.
