“You have no business being here,” says a fiery Glinda (Joely Richardson) to Dorothy in a preview from NBC’s stunning adaptation of the classic “Wizard Of Oz” story entitled Emerald City, premiering Friday, Jan. 6.

The one-minute promo introduces the storyline of the series, which features a 20-year-old Dorothy Gale (Adria Arjona) who is whisked away to another world by a tornado. The land is under the control of an all-powerful ruler (Vincent D’Onofrio) who must deal with a battle between science and magic.

Most adaptations portray Dorothy as a young girl from Kansas, but this adult version of Dorothy is a nurse who dreams of becoming a doctor.

Also, this Dorothy must quickly come to terms with a strange new world where she is threatened by witches, sees the sex of a youngster changed through magic and deals with a Wizard who will do anything to protect the sham of a world he’s created.

NBC’s adaptation of the endearing L. Frank Baum tale was developed by Matthew Arnold and is helmed by visionary director Tarsem Singh.

Other actors in the event series include Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Ana Ularu, Gerran Howell and Florence Kasumba.

The music playing throughout the clip is a remake of Tears for Fears’ 1985 classic “Everybody Wants To Rule The World.”

Emerald City premieres Friday, Jan. 6 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
