NBC is using the upcoming Sochi Winter Olympics to bolster its TV Everywhere initiatives.
The Peacock Network said Monday that cable or satellite TV subscribers will get a 30-minute free pass to stream the Games, at which point they will be prompted to log in and authenticate their account.
After that, they’ll get five minutes of streaming before being asked to log in.
NBC is hoping that the move will help familiarize viewers with its TV Everywhere initiatives and keep subscribers in the long run from cutting the cord and flocking to Netflix and other streaming services.
One potential hiccup: the Olympics aren’t being offered on Comcast’s general TV Everywhere apps like Xfinity, meaning people who don’t want to download another app might just say “thanks, but not thanks…”
