For the first time in Olympics history, NBC is allowing customers of cable, satellite and telco companies to stream all of the competition, setting the Sochi games up to be the biggest single event in TV Everywhere history.
NBC began encouraging customers Monday to begin the process of authenticating their accounts to gain access to the live streams on NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports Live extra app.
The Peacock is rolling out a dedicated marketing campaign to educate consumers about the authentication process, including a series of how-to videos featuring Ryan Seacrest that will be customized for various cable, satellite and telco systems nationwide.
NBC is also dangling a a trip to the 2016 Rio games as a grand prize for one lucky customer who verifies their account before the Sochi games start.
And individual providers are also being given a toolkit of assets they can use to inform their subscribers about the verification process.
“The London Olympics were a watershed moment for TV Everywhere as we verified a staggering 10 million devices,” said Gary Zenkel, President, NBC Olympics, in a statement. “In the short time that has passed since London, TV Everywhere and the verification process have evolved, with more and more subscribers participating daily. We will again work closely with our multi-channel partners to make this the most successful and seamless TV Everywhere event in history.”
NBC also announced Monday that it had extended a digital content and promotion pact with Yahoo for Sochi.
Yahoo will link to and promote NBCOlympics.com in before and during the Olympics, giving Yahoo users one-click access to NBC’s Olympics coverage.
And Yahoo Sports experts will be integrated into NBC Sports’ digital news and analysis. NBC will also integrate Yahoo products like Search, Flickr, and Tumblr into their Olympics coverage.
