TV hasn’t had a good coming-of-age musical since Fox’s Glee, and NBC hopes to provide it with Rise, a series from Jeffrey Seller, producer of Broadway-smash Hamilton, and Jason Katims, who has been behind such series as NBC’s Friday Night Lights and Parenthood.
Like a similar series from the 80s, Fame, Rise tells the story of seven teenagers who become bonded over their mutual love of performing.
The show stars How I Met Your Mother‘s Josh Radnor as the teacher who learns to be a drama coach, as well as Rosie Perez and Moana‘s Auli’i Cravalho.
NBC is showing early faith in the series—and NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt loves his musicals—by premiering it after the season finale of This Is Us at 10 p.m. ET/PT on March 13, and then moving it into This Is Us’ 9 p.m. ET/PT time slot on March 20.
