Climber Alex Honnold successfully free soloed (climbing without ropes or any safety equipment) Yosemite’s famous 3200-foot high wall, El Capitan, and the whole feat was captured in Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin’s Oscar-winning documentary.

National Geographic Latin America wanted to bring the film to viewers for free ... almost. To gain access to the film, viewers had to climb themselves. For every minute they climbed—up stairs, a mountain, whatever—they unlocked one minute of the film. To see the whole thing, they needed to climb for 97 minutes.

Viewers in Latin America need to go to the mobile website climbtowatch.com (only viewable in Latin America). The site uses the cell phone’s internal GPS to track people’s height, and then grants them a minute of viewing time per meter that they climb.

Free Solo became available on National Geographic and the Nat Geo app in Latin America on March 3 and opens in Brazil on March 9.
