In National Geographic’s new docuseries, Trafficked, journalist Mariana van Zeller takes a look behind the curtain to understand the world’s criminal networks and black markets.

Traveling the world, van Zeller meets with the willing players and unwitting pawns who make, buy, sell and move goods, services and ideas. Throughout these interviews, she tries to make sense of the geopolitical circumstances and context that create the world’s multi-trillion dollar shadow economy.

“People don’t realize that black markets are all around us, hidden in plain sight. And what fascinates me most is how normal, law-abiding people - people like you and me - get pulled into these criminal worlds,” said van Zeller in a statement.

Trafficked premieres on Nat Geo on January 1, 2021, and a second season has already been ordered.
