On the heels of its award-nominated Saints & Strangers, National Geographic Channel is expanding on its scripted programming with the addition of Carolyn G. Bernstein.
Bernstein, tapped as Nat Geo’s EVP, head of global scripted development and production, was previously EVP at Endemol Shine Studios and head of scripted TV at Shine America. Bernstein will be based in Los Angeles and report to National Geographic Global Networks CEO Courteney Monroe.
“We are incredibly fortunate Carolyn is joining the network to oversee our scripted efforts,” said Monroe in a statement. “Her vast experience, exceptional creative taste and strong industry relationships will enable us to reach unprecedented new heights with our scripted endeavors in ways that support our brand and new programming vision.”
Bernstein’s task at Nat Geo is to expand its scripted programming efforts to create “long-term, global franchises.” With Shine, Bernstein worked on such scripted projects as FX’s The Bridge, Fox’s Broadchurch adaptation Gracepoint and HBO’s upcoming Utopia.
Nat Geo was nominated for three Critics’ Choice Awards for its recent miniseries event Saints & Strangers, and has several scripted projects in development, with more to be announced at the TCA winter press tour in January.
