Miley Cyrus, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj and the rest of the VMAs A-list each had their own scandalous and shocking moments Sunday night on MTV.

Miley’s costume changes, Kanye’s rambling speech, Justin’s onstage breakdown and Nicki’s throwing shade at the night’s host each made for tweetable and shareable moments all throughout the 2015 Video Music Awards - and that’s not even counting the incredible performances and star-studded red carpet.

So it’s no surprise that MTV’s 2015 VMAs made Twitter history on Sunday, becoming the most-tweeted non-sports program since 2011, when Nielsen Social began tracking TV-related Twitter activity.

Top moments of the night were when Nicki Minaj, accepting her award at the top of the show, called out host Miley Cyrus for insulting her in the press; Kanye West’s acceptance speech for the Video Vanguard Award where he called out MTV and awards in general, Justin Bieber’s tearful moment after his first performance on the VMAs in five years and finally Cyrus’ nip-slip at the end of the night.

More than 2 million people posted almost 22 million tweets throughout the three-hour awards show, spiking with Kanye’s speech at 10:50 p.m. that ended in his announcement that he’s running for president in 2020. That became the night’s most-tweeted moment with 248,000 tweets.

MTV aired the awards show across 10 Viacom networks Sunday night (MTV, MTV2, VH1, VH1 Classic, CMT, Logo, BET, Centric, Comedy Central, TV Land) which added up to 9.8 million viewers Sunday night, down from last year’s 10.3 million.

The 2014 Video Music Awards saw an impressive 12.6 million tweets. This year’s 64 percent increase in tweets were reportedly seen by almost 12 million people.

This year’s VMAs were an enormous social launchpad for MTV’s new Monday night lineup, which kicks off Aug. 31 and the network promoted throughout the evening, including involving almost every show’s cast in its red carpet event.
