How better to close out summer than with a weekend of awards shows? Two are coming up: MTV’s Video Music Awards on Sunday, Aug. 24, at 9 pm ET, and the Primetime Emmys on Monday, Aug. 25, at 8 pm ET. More on the Emmys later, but MTV is priming the pump with a spate of promos.

“Its spontaneous,” the above promo says. “You never know what’s going to happen at the VMAs.” That’s true, with everything from Madonna laying a big kiss on Britney Spears, or Spears sporting a yellow anaconda or Kanye rushing the stage to interrupt Taylor Swift, the VMAs always manage to kick up some dust. And that’s why we love them.

Here’s a few other ways MTV is promoting its biggest night of the year:

In the below, MTV teases the show’s opening number, which it promises will kick things off with a “bang.” Of course, that immediately brings to mind the current hit song, “Bang Bang,” by Jesse J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj, who are all over MTV’s VMA promotion this year.

MTV continues to happily use its tagline that started in 1982 and was even prominently featured in a popular Dire Straits song, “I want my MTV.” MTV’s favorite performers are still using that famous catch-phrase too.

Five men will face off to win the moonman trophy for “Best Male Video”: Eminem, John Legend, Pharrell, Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith. The below promo encourages tune-in to see who will pull off the win.

And what’s good for the men is good for the women. Lorde, Katy Perry, Ariana Grande, Iggy Azalea and Beyonce all are up for Best Female Video.

The 2014 MTV Video Music Awards air Sunday, Aug. 24 at 9 pm ET on MTV.
