As expected, the 73rd annual Golden Globes were full of surprises and bleeping of inappropriate language, and not nearly all of it came from edgy host Ricky Gervais.
Gervais managed to land a few good jokes, including this one: “It’s right that NBC hosts this awards show. It’s fair and impartial because it’s the only network with zero nominations. They just don’t care. I mean, it’s clear they really don’t care.”
USA’s summer hit Mr. Robot broke out as best drama, with Christian Slater named best supporting actor in a TV drama, limited series or made-for-TV movie. Mr. Robot’s star, Rami Malek, lost out to Jon Hamm, still taking his victory lap for the final season of Mad Men. Taraji P. Henson was named best actress in a TV drama for Fox’s Empire.
Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle was the big winner in TV comedy, taking the awards for best comedy and best actor for Gabriel Garcia Bernal. Mozart in the Jungle picked up where Amazon’s Transparent, which won both of these awards last year, left off.
The CW continued to garner wins for its leading ladies, with Rachael Bloom named best actress in a comedy for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, following up on Gina Rodriguez’ (who is not America Ferrera) ground-breaking win last year for Jane the Virgin.
Maura Tierney grabbed a surprise statue for best supporting actress in a drama for Showtime’s The Affair, which won best drama last year but was shut out this year other than Tierney.
PBS’ Wolf Hall upset FX’s Fargo to win best limited series or made-for-TV movie. Oscar Isaacs, coming off of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, won best actor in a limited series or made-for-TV movie for HBO’s Show Me a Hero, while Lady Gaga, dressed elegantly with designer Tom Ford as her date and presenting partner, won best actress for FX’s American Horror Story: Hotel.
