Netflix on Tuesday released a trailer for its new original three-part documentary series Five Came Back based on Mark Harris’ bestselling book.
The story examines the experiences of five filmmakers who interrupted successful Hollywood film careers to serve their country during World War II, risking their lives to tell the stories of the war to the U.S. civilian population.
The five directors featured are Frank Capra, William Wyler, George Stevens, John Huston and John Ford. In the trailer, five modern filmmakers—Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola, Guillermo del Toro, Paul Greengrass and Lawrence Kasdan – offer their perspectives while Meryl Streep serves as narrator.
In conjunction with the launch of Five Came Back on March 31, the streamer also will present 13 documentaries discussed in the series, such as Wyler’s The Memphis Belle: A Story of a Flying Fortress, Stuart Heisler’s The Negro Soldier, Huston’s Report from the Aleutians, Ford’s The Battle of Midway, Capra’s The Battle of Russia and Stevens’ Nazi Concentration Camps.
The streamer also released key art for the docuseries:
