Bob Costas is still out as anchor of primetime Olympics coverage, but filling in him for tonight is no other than host Meredith Vieira. And by doing so, she will make history by becoming the first woman ever to anchor primetime Olympics coverage for NBC.

Friday’s primetime has been covered by Matt Lauer for the past few days, ending Costas’ run of more than 150 consecutive Olympics appearances, but NBC decided to give him a break from hosting both “TODAY” as well as Olympics at night. NBC and Costas are planning for him to return to the desk over the weekend.

NBC will be able to use the switch to its advantage as well, promoting Vieira as future daytime host as well, with her syndicated show set to debut this fall.
